MOLD
MAKING MATERIALS FOR
MAKING YOUR OWN MOLDS
|
DO YOU WANT TO CREATE YOUR
OWN MOLD?
Since we offer the following three moldmaking processes and
materials we will attempt to make your selection the right one for
your project:
RTV Silicones (Room Temperature Vulcanization) Materials
A home vulcanizer (Vulc-A-Mold tool using raw silicone slabs)
Quick-Sil a fast setting RTV Silicone material
Each of the above has its advantages and limitations. First, you
should consider the material of the original model you will be using
for making your mold, its size, does it have any undercuts, how many
pours (replicas you intend on making) and how many different molds
you desire to make. By checking these you should be able to
determine which material best suits your needs. Instructions for use
of each of these materials appear on our website for you to peruse.
RTV SILICONES
RTV silicones are easy to work with, provide detail reproductions
and models can be of most any materials (since no heat nor pressure
is applied during vulcanization), and of any size or shape.
Simple open face molds (for objects that require only one side to be
detailed and the reverse being a flat non-descript surface) can be
made in 8 hours while a two-part mold generally is made in two
8-hour sessions over two nights. The limitations are as follows:
- It takes longer to make a mold using this process.
- The mold produced (with the higher temperature silicones up to
700degrees F) is not a long life mold. If the model does not
have any undercuts (where you may tear the mold when releasing
it) you should be able to obtain 25-40 pours (or less) before
the mold is no longer useable. The low temperature silicones
have a higher tear strength but will not accept casting
materials over 450 degrees F without mold damage (pouring
materials should be Alumilite-a super casting plastic, plaster,
or resins). This material is better for models with slight
undercuts as the mold is more flexible.
- Material costs are higher.
- For a two part mold you will need the mold release cream
(#5001 & 40000 mold clay).
We offer the RTV in pints, quarts and gallons.
The high temperature silicones are numbered 20600 (pint), 20700
(Qt.) and 20800 (gal.)
The high tear strength silicones are numbered 20601 (pint), 20701
(Qt.) and 20801 (gal.)
QUICK-SIL RTV PUTTY
Quick-Sil is a revolutionary new mold making material producing a
very long lasting (1000ís of uses) silicone rubber mold that
accurately reproduces detail with % shrinkage in only 15 minutes
(for an open face mold) or 30 minutes for a double sided mold. This
is a two-part (A&B) material that needs no careful or precise
mixing. No messy liquids and no vulcanizer needed.
Models may be of almost any type material (no wax or hollow cast
figures as pressure is required for satisfactory vulcanization).
Paint removal of original model is not necessary. Complete Kit
#50000 includes 2-lb Quick-Sil kit, adjustable wood mold frame
press, mold release cream and 1- lb. mold clay. Limitations:
- A mold frame press (item #5002) or jewelry mold frame is
required for satisfactory results.
- Model size limitations 7 ‡" in length, 4 ‡"
width, 3 ‡" diameter.
- Mold release cream required (item #5001).
- Packed only in a 2-lb. Kit containing equal parts A&B
cost $40 U.S. (this should allow you to make at least 2 molds
of roughly 4x3x1" size).
The above information is presented to allow you to make the best
choice of a method and material for your mold making projects.
Complete instructions of the mold making process are provided with
each material ordered.

[QUICK-SIL] [LIQUID
RTV] [VULC-A-MOLD]
Would you like to make replicas of
pirate coins (pieces of 8), medallions, religious figures, collectable figures, etc.?
We have a variety of mold making materials that will enable you to reproduce your
originals in cast metal or Alumilite plastic. The molds are easy to make and the
casting is fun! All you need is an idea.

NEW RTV MATERIALS MAKE CUSTOM MOLD MAKING EASIER AND FASTER. Now you can make your own custom silicone rubber molds
for metal casting easier with our new RTV
(Room Temperature
Vulcanization) materials.
We carry (2) RTV materials:
Quick-Sil & Liquid RTV
Liquid RTV Kits are available in 1.1 lb., 2.2 lbs., and gallon
size (11 lbs.).
Quick-Sil Kits come on (2) 1 lb. containers, A&B
Making a reusable mold with Room
Temperature Vulcanization Silicone Rubber is easy, fast curing, Ideal for use with
plastics and wax originals or models too large for our Vulc-A-Mold tool.
The Vulc-a-mold Tool is a
quality home vulcanizing tool enabling you to make a long lasting, reusable,
silicone rubber mold, in a toaster oven in just 1 hour. It requires no other special
tools or previous mold making experience. You can produce many copies of an original with
little loss of detail.
HOW
TO DETERMINE THE VOLUME OF RTV RESIN OR ALUMILITE
FOR MAKING OR POURING A MOLD
FORMULA:
To find the volume in a square or rectangular form (The form is the
cavity you have selected or built into which you are going to pour).
|
Length x Width x Height = cubic inches
Example: 3î x 4î x 2î = 24 cubic inches
Take .554 x 24 cubic inches = 13 º ounces
FORMULA: To
find the volume of a round (cylinder) form.
3.14 (pie) x radius squared x height.
EXAMPLE: 6î diameter cylinder x 3î tall
3.14 (pie) x Radius (1/2 the diameter) SQUARED (to square a
number, take the number and multiply it by the same number)
Example: 3 squared will be 3 x 3 = 9
So you will use 9 as the radius squared number and then
multiply it by the height. This
will give you cubic inches.
3.14 x 9 x 3î tall.
3.14 x 9 = 28.26 x 3î = 84.48 cubic inches.
Now use the formula to find the number of
ounces. (cubic inches
x .5654 ounces)
84.78 x .554 = 46.968
ounces or rounded off to 47 ounces. |
